Learning Center

Learning Center
Barbara and Arthur Hirst, volunteers and supporters of The Learning Center

The Paul Wolk Learning Center is a component of East House Career Services that helps individuals improve their education in order to increase job placement and advancement. This also promotes more effective involvement with family and community. Services include: Basic reading and math education, GED preparation; computer skills training; referrals to schools and skills training programs, and follow-along support.

The Center has been in operation for 12 years in collaboration with the Greece Central School District, which provides teacher services for 12 hours a week. In addition, East House collaborates with Literacy Volunteer and the United Way’s Volunteer Connection for volunteer recruitment and literacy training. The Learning Center serves more than 70 individuals a year and has proven to be successful in helping individuals improve their education and self-confidence necessary for further employment and training. Just last year, four clients earned their GED, and sixty-seven clients were hired by local employers.

The Paul Wolk Learning Center is funded wholly by donations.  Pictured at left are Arthur and Barbara Hirst, who support the program most generously each year. “We feel it’s so important to give clients the tools they need to achieve success,” said Art. We are happy to support this worthwhile program.”

In 2009, the Wolk Foundation awarded East House a generous gift of $50,000 to move the center to new space, which was renamed in memory of Paul Wolk, one of East House founders.
